Meet the Fifth Grade Teachers!

Tony Heitland
Mr. Heitland lives in the town of Thornton, which is located 12 miles south of Clear Lake.  He has been teaching 5th grade for the last 4 years.  He previously taught special education for 9 years in Ventura, and was the At-Risk coordinator for GH for 1 year as well.  He recently graduated with a Masters Degree in Education from Morningside University.  Mr. Heitland likes to create a classroom environment that is both relaxing and safe.  He also likes to make students laugh.  Your child will enjoy all the pictures that he takes for a class scrapbook.  If math isn't their favorite subject at the beginning of the year, it will be by the end of the year! 
Becky Jolivette
Mrs. Jolivette is the 5th grade Social Studies teacher and is passionate about teaching 5th graders American History!  Before coming to Garner, Mrs. Jolivette taught 5th grade in Northfield, Minnesota and 4th grade in Clear Lake, Iowa.  She also worked as a TAG teacher in Boone, Iowa, and was the TAG teacher in the Garner-Hayfield district for 11 years.  This is her fourth year of teaching 5th grade in Garner.
Mrs. Jolivette holds undergraduate degrees from Waldorf College and Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.  She holds a Masters Degree in Education from Iowa State University.  Mrs. Jolivette is a lifelong learner and has enjoyed taking graduate classes from UNI, the University of Minnesota, the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, and the University of Bristol, England.
Mrs. Jolivette and her husband Bruce live in Garner.  They have 3 children, Erik, Michael and Krista, and a dog named Porgi.

As educators we believe students at the fifth grade level need to develop responsibility, work collaboratively, communicate with others effectively, and learn to solve problems. Students need to show respect for others and feel safe to effectively learn. As students prepare for middle school, emphasis is placed on organizational and study skills.

*First group book will be Sign of the Beaver.

*Field Trip to N.I.A.C.C. for Entrepreneur activity. (November)
 
*We will be collecting pop can money for the Angel Tree project in the month of November.
